Wayne Township School “Kid Van” abt 1910
This photo belonged to Mildred (Noxon) Littler and was taken around 1910 or before as far as I can surmise. Her brother Harold Noxon is listed on the back as being on the left side of the front row and he was born in 1900. They grew up on a farm on S. Hayes Road in Wayne Township. This photo was taken in front of Wayne School and the note at the top says “Mr. Crowe and his bus load of Hayes Road pupils”
I heard my mother tell about riding to school (born in 1911, graduated in 1929) in the “kid van” but couldn’t quite visualize it. She told me how the kids would snuggle down into some straw with warm soapstones wrapped in cloth to keep warm in the winter weather. – Contributed by Gail Littler Piper via the Wayne Township FB Group
