Normal & Kingsville School Commencements

CORRESPONDENCE: Kingsville

Thursday afternoon at the town hall, the third annual commencement of the Ashtabula County Normal took place. A very excellent program was given, which was as follows: Piano prelude, “The Star Spangled Banner,” __ Troyer, Edith May Tuttle; invocation, Rev. P. W. Sinks, S. T. D.; chorus, “Forget-Me-Not,” Theodore Giese, class; reading, “Ol’ Mistus,” James Brotwood? Moore, Ednah May Brydle; piano duet, “Cradle Song,” C. Bohm, Lydia Genevieve Coombs and Edith May Tuttle; address, Rev. Horace W. Dewey, D. D., Geneva, Ohio; chorus, “Sleepy Time, ” Laura Sedgewick Collins?, class; reading, “My First Recital,” W. A. Eaton, Katherine Frances Benson; piano solo, “Barcarolle,” __ Grodsky, Lydia Genevieve Coombs; violin solo, “The Village Blacksmith,” Dudley Buck, John Helton Keller; presentation of the class of 1917, D. O. McKay, director; presentation of certificates, H. D. Clark, superinendent of schools for Ashtabula County; chorus, “Medley from the South,” Harvey Hale Peck, class; benediction, Rev. E. L. Stanley.

Twelve students completed one year of professional training and four one half year. Georgia A. Beasley, Bessie B. Bowdler, Ednah M. Brydle, L. Genevieve Coombs, Edna M. Erhart, Rachel W. Hedden, Ruth A. Landon, Mildred M. Morris, Ella M. Slaughter, Althaea A. Tinker, H. Ruth Warner completed one year of training. Katherine F. Benson, John H. Keller, Bernice J. Michel and Mary C. Young completed one half year of training. All the students are graduates of first grade high schools, the standard of the Normal School being raised this year. Last year 21 students were graduated and this year 16, the difference in numbers being explained by the higher standard, as several in last year’s class were not high school graduates.

 

The 33rd annual commencement of the Kingsville high school was held at the town hall auditorium, Friday evening, May 25. Five boys and six girls were graduated: Noble Beasley, Georgia Beasley, Homer Cleveland, Courtney Denison, Edna Erhart, Glenne Nelson, Frances Pinkerton, Luella Porter, Otis Rexroad, Anna Shepard, Lillian Terrell — one member, Courtney Denison, had the misfortune to come down with a severe attack of tonsilitis Friday morning so was unable to be present and give his oration. Following was the program:

Processional, Rosabelle Kendall; invocation, Rev. D. D. McKay; music, mixed quartet, Miss Coombs, Miss Whelpley, Mr. Kellar, Mr. Warner; oration, The White Man’ Burden — The Negro, Luella Porter; oration, Americanism, Courtney Denison; solo, Frances Pinkerton; oration, International Dependence, Glenne Nelson; oration, Farm Interest Paramount, Homer Cleveland; music, quartet; address, Rev. C. W. Flewelling; solo, Florence Wright; presentation of class, Principal R. S. Shriver; response, District Supt. S. C. Leech; presentation of diplomas, C. R. Smith, president of Board of Education; class song; benediction, Dr. Sinks.

The schools closed Friday. The closing week was given over to closing activities which were up to the usual standard, and several programs were even better than usual. The programs were well attended by the friends and parents of the pupils, showing the community interest and appreciation of the efforts of the teachers in our schools.

The smaller high schools of the county formed a league baseball association this spring. Kingsville won every game, winning the silver loving cup and the banner. These were displayed Friday evening at commencement.
