The Ashtabula County Squirrel Hunters


In the fall of 1862, Ashtabula County raised a company of militia, referred to as “Squirrel Hunters,” which went out from Kingsville to Cincinnati to help defend southern Ohio from rebel invasion. Those men in the company included:

Officers: Capt. Alden P. Steele, Kingsville; 1st Lieut. Hiram B. Farley, Jefferson; 2nd Lieut. Ira Blodgett, North Sheffield; 1st Sergt. Geo. W. Thompson, Kingsville; 2nd Sergt. Dwight Hodge, Buffalo, N. Y.; 3rd Sergt. Geo. W. Peebles, N. Sheffield; 4th Sergt. Julus E. Colburn, N. Sheffield; 5th Sergt. Andrew W. Gage, Kingsville.

Kingsville: Henry Adams, Austin Avery, Soloman Ackerman, G. H. Brown, Levi D. Butt, Benjamin Colgrove, Fred G. Clark, Wm. Curtiss, R. S. H. Clute, Tenins Delno, Daniel D. Dunks, Horace Delaney, Almon R. Eastman, Henry Fox, Chas. W. Fellows, C. Albert Green, Hiram Grover, Andrew Howard, John R. Hatch, Francis M. Hine, Albert H. Hawkins, Geo. L. Hulbert, Joel Jones, James L. Lowe, Geo. A. Lyon,Horace Palmer, Chas. D. Rathbone, Nelson J. Rogers, Perry G. Rogers, David Y. Richmond, John Stanton, Orrin Wakefield Jr., Barnard C.
